Spring training trip, days one and two.

Hi there!!

I'm writing this from my room, at the knights inn. In mesa after a couple of good days of baseball.

I drove down from salt lake, overnight Wednesday into Thursday. I do not recommend making this trip alone, or at night. It is a draining drive.

I made Tempe diablo stadium 2 hours before the game.

I was fortunate enough to get there early enough to watch practices featuring most of the minor league camps, and so I followed the trails inside.

The team lost the game against the brewers, but that result was inconsequential. It sucked, but did nothing to dampen my enthusiasm for the fact that I was at my first. Spring training game ever!

Tempe diablo stadium is a nice park. Comfortable seats. But lacks in shade.

Day two started out at minors camp practices with the angels, where I got to exchange pleasantries with a few of the guys with history in salt lake. Including a couple of guys who recognized me, before, I saw them. It made me feel like a million bucks, I won't lie.

I learned the story behind the walker finish.... The events that lead up to today's two-tone dyed bats which just fascinated me.

I found Bobby wilson, Brandon wood, and peter bourjos practicing buns on the 'half field'. And it was cool just to watch all three of these guys in big league uniforms.

After they left, I got to my car, and headed to phoenix municipal stadium, home of theA's spring training.

The stadium is nice. However, I Have something to bitch about. The seats that Are in the outfield are metal benches. I'm not a tremendously smart man, but metal benches cook a lot of butts in Phoenix weather.

We ended up winning this game 11-3, and it was fantastic to see the guys play well. Kohl, and starter matt palmer pitched well, and a lot of the guys had multiple hits.

Tomorrow, it's the white sox in glendale. It is a pilgrimage that ever fan must make!

What to do, what to do.....

I am at a genuine loss.

When I was younger, I had one or two players that I followed, and it wasn't hard to show my loyalty.

For the past 3 years, I have been a season ticket holder for the Bees, as a result i have seen, and formed attachments to more than a few guys. and it brings me to this quandry. How do you show support for ALL the guys that you want to succeed?.

In my closet alone, I have 6 game used jerseys (from different players) that i've purchased, and just ordered an authentic from mlb.com for another guy.

Having had the great fortune to meet, and watch these guys interact with fans, its hard to not want to see them do well.

Guess its a pretty good problem to have. Good luck at camp this year guys.

Oh Spring Training, Where are you?!

Welcome!

As I write this we are sitting just over two weeks away from Spring Training, and 10 weeks away from the home opener.

Everyday, thanks to Twitter, news trickles in about this player signing with that team, or that player signing elsewhere.

Some names you're glad to see go. Some names break your heart. But that's part of the grand sport we all enjoy.

This year, I changed my season ticket, on the First Base side this time, and I can't wait!

Salt Lake hosts the Triple A all-star game this year, and I get to Go!!

Anyway, think happy thoughts my friends!! Go Angels!!

Wrap up of the Portland Series

4 Games at home, 1 rainout game, a monsoon during a dh and a mudhole at First Base.

Thats the short Short version.

Now the Good part, we won 3 of 4, against an in-division rival, as we leapfrogged over portland to 2nd place. just a game and a half back of the Skysox.

Thursday was Snowed out. Friday we lost. We won both games Saturday. and sunday was almost good recovery.

I cannot remember so many cold/rainy days this (relatively) late into into the year.

Got a foul ball off the bat of Terry Evans, Thank you Portland OF'r Mike Baxter.

Boys, Good luck in Cali, and we will try and have the field wrung out by the time you get back.

Game 6 against Vegas…. Rainout, soo Catch up time.

Game 4, the last game against Tacoma. Not much to write home about, except a 4-3 lead blown. we lost the game in the ninth. Thanks to a home run, and what seemed like 17 singles. but in reality, was 4.

Game 5…. Vegas, we won 8-5

Daniel Davidson pitched six and two-third amazing looking innings and Gary Patchett drove in three runs. Davidson (2-0) got his second win against vegas this year. Patchett tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning with a single and then broke that tie with a two-run homer, his first of the year, in the sixth.

Just trying to feel good again at the plate and put together some good at-bats.

Terry Evans delivered his first four-hit game of the season with three singles and a double, while Mark Trumbo added two hits, a double and his fourth homerun of the year.

Cory Aldridge, and :Pete Bourjous extended their hit streaks to 10 games.

Game 3: Bees 10-7

We finally got the home win out of the Way.

Trevor Reckling started, it was a tad bit rough, allowing 7 runs, he never made it out of the third. but aside from the home runs, he didn’t pitch bad.

We owe this game to two Guy’s Heroics Rich Thompson, and Michael Ryan.

Rich was called in in the top of the third, with the team down 7-2. He proceeded to ice down the Tacoma bats, 4 scoreless innings, 46 Pitches.

lets flash forward to the bottom of the 9th. at this point. We’d managed to get back to 7-5. Terry Evans lead off with a home run, his first hit since being outrighted from anaheim.

Michael Ryan comes up with one out, runners on first, and second, and Tattoo’s a pitch from Tacoma pitcher Chad Cordero. We win the game 10-7.

This is the first game the bees have won, after being behind entering the ninth since Adam Pavkovich’s grandslam.

The Home opener

like the name implies, the home opener is literally, like coming home. for season ticket holders its the chance to catch up with your fellow regulars, and just soak in the ambiance.

It was a record setter last night, in more ways than one,
Home attendance: 15.057

24 runs, over 30 hits, four errors, and Fireworks.

The hard luck part... we lost. tacomas bats were hotter at the right time, plain and simple, but this is a loss i can handle, it was back and forth all night long... from the opening pitch, to the bottom of the tenth.

Opening Roadtrip, against Vegas

Well, good thing we are very newly into the season. The boys finished the first 4 games of the year 1-3.

Plagued by some unpleasant defensive miscues, and questionable strike zones, it was painful to listen to. Better luck in Reno.

The Good news:

Stolen bases, speed, multi-hit innings, and consistent pitching. Oh, and Trevor Reckling’s sterling Triple A Debut.

So, series is over.... winter meetings are over..... we are now officially in the "dead space" of the baseball season before Spring Training, and yet, there is news.

For the Bees not all of it has been good so far.

Jose Arredondo was not Tendered a contract offer, after deciding at the end of last week that he was going to have tommy john surgery to correct his elbow problems.

When he is on his A game, we're in trouble.

Matt Brown was not tendered an offer either, the 08 Beijing Olympian now is in hopes of finding a new team.

Chone Figgins Signed with Seattle, meaning Brandon Wood will have his best chance to win the starting 3B job in Anaheim. This is good for us, as Freddy Sandoval will see even more Playing Time.

The Coaching Staff is Back... which is good, i think.. :)~ but we'll see.

Labor Day 2009 – Game 72

Today was Game 4 of the last home stand of the year.
4 Games against the Sacramento Rivercats. The Athletics AAA affiliate.

We took the first three games quite handily, Guaranteeing us a .500 season.

Then today Happened. Personally, I can accept a loss, when we get outplayed. But when we get outplayed, AND the umpire at first base blows 4 straight calls. It Sucks.

But, all things Considered it was a good year. Managed to achieve all of my signature goals. Watched offensive records fall, and made new friends.

Heres to a better 2010 -

And hopefully the return of Adam Pavkovich to the Angels.
But!!, if he signs with another club, they will properly fast track him to the bigs.

The end of the year… DAMNIT!!

As i write this, the team is in Tacoma, about 2 hours away from the end of the last road game of the year, Figured it’d be a good time to reflect on the year, as the season ends Monday at Home.

Lot of changes this year, Starting with the loss of Nick Adenhart, and the (cough cough) revolving door that has been our pitching rotation, and ending with the trade of Sean Rodriguez to the Rays, as the dreaded player to be named later, in the Scott Kazmir Trade.

But, in the light of all that tumult, we still managed to put together a Good-ish Year.

Records Fell this Year -

New Home Run leader – Brandon Wood.

Adam Pavkovich, in the last year of his contract with the Angels, waled on the record books.

He is now the Bees all-time leader in:
games played, at-bats, doubles, extra base hits, RBI’s and sacrifice flies.

The records For Sac Bunts, and Ground Into Double Plays, are also in reach, 3 and 2 respectively.

He also has played all 9 –positions on the field including a memorable stint on the mound where he notched two strikeouts.

We have 4 games back at home starting tomorrow night, and are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, the First time in 4 years that Sacramentos road to the title won’t go through Salt Lake.

Lets play hard, and leave it on the field, cause there’s no reason to save it.

Autograph Habits in Salt Lake.

Whether you know it or not. You’ve seen us at the games. The autograph seekers.

And you’ve probably wondered why the hell we do what we do, night after night.

Its because we love our guys, and want to get as much interaction as we can, before the seasons done.

Most of the Players are Happy to sign, night after night. But….. everyone has their quirks.

Starting Pitchers will never, EVER, sign on the night that they pitch. Its considered a bad omen. BUT, the 2 pitchers that I cajoled into signing had the best game of their year. a 2 hit complete game shutout and 12 k’s over 6 and 2/3rds innings.

The Best time to get the Starters to sign is the day before they pitch. So get to know the rotation for a week or two before trying to get them.

Bullpen Pitchers – Come in to Varieties, the Call ups, and the Big leaguers. and there is a a difference.

Big leaguers will only sign in the bullpen…. unless you are family or a direct guest. But they will gladly sign for anyone that asks. in the bullpen

The call ups will sign all the way down the line and for anyone that asks.

players are another story all together.

some sign before warmups, after warm ups, or only after games that they hit 2 home runs…. Good luck

Fresno series Wrapup – and my vent of excess air.

the last home stand of july is always the hottest. And most disappointing.

After the 4th Game of the home stand, we have been swept in a home series for the first time since august of 05, which was also against fresno…. hmmm…..

After tonight, there are only around 20 home games left in the season. a bit bittersweet, since it is going to be difficult to become 4 time defending champs.

Terry evans got called up during this stand, his second since joining thet angels organization in ‘06. and in typical fashion… he gets called up ONE home run shy of becoming Salt Lakes first 20/20 man in the 16 year history of the franchise.

Its this part of the year that I get worn out. I love baseball, it fills a hole in my life like no other. It is my home away from my apartment, and gives me a semblance of a social life. I’m accepted, and even to a point complimented while there.

Most of the players on the team are happy to sign autographs for fans, and i’m fortunate to call two of them friends.

6 Games to recap - Good Heavens

Due to the Schedule that i've had the last little bit, I haven't blogged the way that I wanted to.

The Last 6 games of the 9 game stand we went 3-3.

We took 3 of 5 From Colorado, meaning that we gained a game in the standings. Better than being 10 back, we are 4.5 games behind at the break. Not insurmountable, BUT with Woody and Wilson in Anaheim, and No Stability in our pitching, It will be a challenge to see if we can get a 4th straight Division Title.

Some memorable moments from this homestand included the July 4th Jersey auction. and the Famous Chicken on the 11th.

Had the unique opportunity of being on field saturday during a season ticket holder event, and had an overwhelming flashback to the days of the trappers. Even though the stadium is gone, and the original field and scoreboard are spread to the four winds, the memory is still there of over a century of baseball past.

It made me think of the luck that I have living in utah. We have 3 professional teams within a one hour drive. The Raptors, Owlz and Bees.

I define professional as getting paid, and affiliated with a major league club.The Dodgers and Angels are represented at the short season pioneer league, and the Bees are triple a members of the Pacific Coast League.

Enjoy baseball Folks, we have a 3 day allstar break coming up, and then 4 on the road in portland, before coming home.

Game 42 – Tacoma (Win – 5-4)

“In case you haven't noticed, and judging by the attendance you haven't, the Bees have managed to win a few ball games”

Paraphrasing the Immortal Harry Doyle seemed to be appropriate after our record the last few weeks. After winning only a third of our games in the last little bit, we’ve won 2 out of three this homestand, including 2 straight. It’s been a while… but i think thats called a winning streak.

Tied at 4 after 4 complete, the game settled into a great pitching performance by our boys, for a while. We manufactured a Run in the bottom of the 5th, on a Sean Rodriguez Single, tacoma throwing error, and a bobby wilson sacrifice.

Free Scones were achieved, as our guys struck out 7 Tacoma Hitters.

In the 9th Inning Moose Mosebach Topped 100 mph on the mound while warming up to get the 2nd out of the ninth.

July 4th – independence day – Game 40

Military jerseys were auctioned off tonight – I got francisco rodriguez’s, my Friend Brian, Got Jeremy Hills.

First game of the longest homestand of the year-

We lost to Tacoma 7-5 in twelve innings.

We had a 5 – 4 lead in the top of the 9th, but closer jeremy hill left a pitch in the batters wheelhouse, tied the game with a home run.

We are 2 –4 in the last six games…. 7.5 back of colorado, and more disturbing – 0nly 2 games over .500 – This Homestand will likely Determine whether or not we can finish and defend our division title.

Game 37 – Fresno – Win 5-4

The second half of the Regular season started out on a light hearted note, with the Subway Nascar race Car in front of the Stadium Tonight. Dan Davidson, Ryan Budde, Brad Knox, and Gary Patchett all came out to examine, and sit in it before the gates opened.

Tonight’s Sig Haul was better than expected.

Fernando Rodriguez, Francisco Rodriguez, Brad Knox and Chris Gutierrez signed the Team Ball I'm Currently working on, and Shane Loux signed his 2008 Bees Card.

Dan Denham was tasked with ending the 6 game skid we were on, and he was up to the task. 8 complete innings, 2 runs, 8 hits.

Jeremy Hill closed a blood pressure raising 2 run 9th inning to preserve a 5-4 win.

Gary Hit a 3 run Homer in the 7th.

currently 2.5 back of the skysox. Damnit.

fun moment of the night, Chris was signing in line, and somebody asked him to sweet spot a ball. for those not familiar with the term, the sweet spot is the long stretch between the seams. here was the exchange

“no, we get in trouble for that”

This is the Halfway point of the regular season, we lost 8-1. (2.5 Games back of the Skysox)

Shane Loux, last years pcl pitcher of the year started tonight, on a rehab assignment. as much as i love Shane’s story, and respect what he did last year, he needed one or two more starts at single a, or even a start at double a, before getting sent up. His start was rough, delivery inconsistent, and just Yucky!!!

We kept it close until the 7th. only 2-1, at that point, then Fresno scored 5 runs, including 2 on a 3-2, 2 out double that was millimeters over the glove of brad coon.

Unfortunate moment of the Night, fan took a foul ball in the face, and was treated by medical personnel.

Still Need:

Gutierrez, Wilson, Francisco, and Fernando Rodriguez, and the starting rotation.

At the present time, we have 5 players on the DL or undergoing rehab.

luis figueroa – broken leg

Freddy Sandoval – Sprained Left Wrist

Reggie Willits – unknown – but no playing time, nor was he seen during the recent homestand

Anthony ortega – arm strain. beginning to think that with the number of angels organization pitchers on the dl, maybe… just maybe, they need to rework thekir fitness program.

Chris Pettit – Broken Hammate Bone.

This is the farthest down i remember the team being. But they still are playing hard.

Game 34 – Colorado Springs…..

Last game of an odd 3 day set against previous division leading skysox.

Matt Brown started our scoring with a home run to right field.

The Bees held a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning when the Sky Sox loaded the bases with one out. Matt Murton hit what appeared to be an inning-ending double play ball, but an error by third baseman Brandon Wood allowed two runs to score to give Colorado Springs a 7-6 lead.

Salmon un deservedly took the loss, although the run he allowed was unearned.Wood and Bobby Wilson also chipped in two hits apiece, as the Sky Sox pulled back to within one-half game of the first place Bees.

Still… taking 2 of 3, and the division lead was a good homestand over all.

Game 34 - Colorado. Win 1-0

What can you Say about a 2 hit complete game shutout, except "FREAKIN AWESOME MAN"

Trevor Bell, new Call Up from Arkansas making his triple a Debut..... 9 innings of 2 hit shutout ball.

We scored our Run in the 7th, when Adam "toasty" Pavkovich, Drove in Matt Brown with a Sac Bunt, and one out. Great Job Guys.

Game 33 - Colorado Springs - Won - 8-5

First Game at Home after a 9 day .500 Road Trip.

with Division leader Colorado Springs in town, I knew i Had to be there.And i'm glad i was.

Howie Kendrick, and Jose Arredondo were making their first appearances in salt lake in a while. Howie, is a gracious autographer, he signed for everyone in line, but only one item per person, which was more than lackey did during his rehab stay.

Arredondo signed, as well , but he was hit or miss on who he would sign away from the bullpen. My Friend Anna helped get my card from last years set signed. (thank you anna)

Also got trevor bell to sign too, new kid, just called up from arkansas, to replace sean o'sullivan.

All the scoring was done by the 5th inning, which makes it a tad boring . personally, i'd rather see the first 5 scorless, and then an eruption the last 4. ;)

Highlights - Brad Coon got an inside the park homer out of a single, an d a series of throwing errors. And Brandon Got a Grand Slam of the starter for the sky sox.

Any day we take over the division lead is a good day.

Games 26 – 29: Against Reno, Massive Catchup Post.

Games 26, and 27.

Adam Pavkovich belted a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to give the Salt Lake Bees a 9-5 win over Reno Aces to earn a split in their doubleheader. The Aces claimed game one 7-3.

Sean Rodriguez led off the inning with an infield single and moved to third on a double to right field by Brandon Wood. Matt Brown was intentionally walked to load the bases.

After Ryan Budde's grounder forced out Rodriguez at the plate, Pavkovich drilled a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall to end the game. The Bees trailed four times in the nightcap and came back to to tie it each time.

Ruben Gotay homered in the top of the seventh to give Reno a 5-4 lead, but Pavkovich forced extra inning, as his double play ball with the bases loaded and no outs brought home the tying run. Jeremy Hill (1-1) tossed two scoreless inning to earn the win.

In game one, Reno already led 2-0 when Ruben Gotay belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Down 5-0 in the fifth, the Bees snapped a 23 1/3 inning scoreless streak with three runs, the first two coming on a home run by Reggie Willits that just hooked inside the right field foul pole.

Dan Denham (3-2) took the loss for Salt Lake, as he allowed five runs, four of them earned, on six hits with a season high six strikeouts. Gary Patchett led the Bees with two hits, which included his first triple of the year, and second at the triple a level.

Game 28

Brad Knox tossed seven and two-thirds strong innings to help lead the Salt Lake Bees to an 8-3 win over the Reno Aces on Sunday afternoon.

Knox (4-2) allowed just three runs, one earned, on four hits in the longest outing for a Salt Lake starter this season. At one point, he retired 12 straight batters before issuing a two out walk to Ruben Gotay in the eighth inning. Daniel Davidson came on in relief and finished the game with one and one-third scoreless innings.

Salt Lake trailed 3-1 in the fourth when Bobby Wilson tied the game with a two-run double. The Bees took the lead in the fifth on a run-scoring triple by Chris Pettit and after a walk to Terry Evans, Sean Rodriguez drilled a three-run homer to left to give the Bees a 7-3 lead.

Rodriguez had two hits and three RBI, while Jean Segura added two hits, including a single in his first career Triple-A at-bat.

Game 29

Gary Patchett belted a two-run homer in the sixth inning to cap off a five-run rally, as the Salt Lake Bees edged the Reno Aces 6-5 on Monday night. The Bees trailed 5-1 going into the bottom of the fifth when they pulled to within one run on a two-run double by Chris Pettit and a sacrifice fly by Sean Rodriguez. Bobby Wilson led off the sixth with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Budde. Patchett then lifted an 0-2 pitch from Jason Urquidez (0-1) over the left field wall to put the Bees in front with his second home run of the season.

Francisco Rodriguez (3-1) tossed two scoreless innings for the win. Jeremy Hill earned his eleventh save after he gave up back-to-back singles to open up the ninth, but got Alex Romero to fly out and John Hester to ground into a game ending 5-4-3 double play. Wilson had three hits and one run batted in for the Bees, while Patchett and Pettit each added two hits and two RBI. Angels pitcher Kelvim Escobar worked five innings in his rehab start for the Bees and allowed five runs on eight hits with one strikeouts and two walks. He threw 87 pitches, 46 for strikes.

Game 25 – Military Appreciation Night – Reno

Any game that starts with the flyover of an apache helicopter, and ends with fireworks….. can still be a disappointment.

It was the boys first game back in Salt lake after an 8 Game Road Trip, and the weariness showed.

Mr Durable – Freddy Sandoval is on the 15 Day dl with a bad left wrist.

Cesar Valdez tossed eight scoreless innings to lead the Reno Aces to a 4-0 win over the Salt Lake Bees on Friday night.

Valdez (3-4) allowed just two hits; a double off the right field wall by Matt Brown in the second inning and in the seventh, Terry Evans lifted a fly ball to right that Reno outfielder Trent Oeltjen lost in the twilight for a two base hit. Valdez struck out six and walked one.

David Austen (1-2) was the tough luck losing pitcher for the Bees, as he allowed just two runs on five hits in six innings with two strikeouts and one walk. The Bees have now lost a season-high equaling three straight games and have dropped eight of their last 11 games

The Bees are 0-3 on Save The Hoohah's nights, and military appreciation nights that i've attended.

We lost 9 to 8, despite a valiant effort by our hitters to win via the long ball.

Rich had a quick scoreless outing, 3 Strikeouts, and a double to close out the game.

Game Recap - A seventh inning sacrifice fly by Cory Aldridge snapped an 8-8 tie and give the Omaha Royals a 9-8 win over the boys.

Omaha led 8-1 before Salt Lake rallied with three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to pull even, but Francisco Rodriguez (2-1) opened the seventh by walking Kila Ka'aihue and giving up a single to J.R. House. Travis Metcalf advanced the runners with a sacrifice before Aldridge lifted a fly ball to medium deep center to bring home the eventual winning run.

The Bees were down seven when Sean Rodriguez belted a three run homer in the fourth. In the fifth, Chris Pettit brought home a run with a ground out before Brandon Wood's three run shot tied the game.

Wood would end up with two hits and three runs batted in, while Pettit added two hits and one RBI. Freddy Sandoval also homered in the game, as Salt Lake fell short in their attempt to complete their first series sweep of the season.

The Bees led 13-6 after five innings, but had to hold on for the win, as Jeremy Hill struck out J.R. House to end the game and record his seventh save of the season. Brad Salmon allowed just one unearned run in one and one-third innings for the win.

Wood also doubled for three hits and three runs batted in, while Matt Brown added two hits with three runs batted in. Chris Pettit had two hits, including a homerun and two RBI, while Adam Pavkovich chipped in a pair of doubles and two RBI.

Sean Rodriguez belted a two-run homer to snap a 5-5 tie in the fifth inning, and the Bees broke the game open with a five run seventh, as Salt Lake outslugged the Omaha Royals 15-7 on Tuesday night.

Omaha reliever Yasuhiko Yabuta (0-1) had retired the first two batters in the fifth before Brandon Wood extended the inning with a double.

Rodriguez then drilled a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall to put the Bees out in front. Salt Lake then plated five runs in the seventh to put the game away with a two-run single by Adam Pavkovich and RBI singles by Ryan Budde, Freddy Sandoval and Wood.

Anthony Ortega (2-1) picked up the win despite struggling in his first start since being optioned back to Salt Lake. He allowed five runs on seven hits, including three home runs with three strikeouts and one walk.

All nine members of the Bees' starting lineup had at least one hit, led by Rodriguez' three hits, which included two homers, and five RBI. Sandoval added three hits and two RBI, as the Bees set a new season high for runs scored in one game.

Game 15

The Salt Lake Bees had their five-game winning streak come to an end as they fell 8-6 to the Tacoma Rainiers on Wednesday night. Four Bees pitchers combined to give up nine hits, but they also walked eight batters and hit two more. Salt Lake led 2-1 in the fifth when the Rainiers took the lead with three runs on a two-run double by Callix Crabbe and an RBI single by Jerry Owens. Starter Sean O'Sullivan (2-1) took the loss, as he allowed four runs on five hits in four and two-third innings.

Chris Pettit had four hits, including a triple, and two runs batted in to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Freddy Sandoval added two hits and two RBI, while Terry Evans chipped in two hits and drove in one run. Brandon Wood went 1-for-5 with one RBI in his return to Salt Lake from the Angels.

Game 16.

Tacoma broke open a close game with an eight-run seventh inning, as the Rainiers cruised to a 13-3 win over the Salt Lake Bees on Thursday night.

Tacoma already led 5-3, but they banged out seven hits in the seventh including back-to-back homers by Mike Morse and Michael Saunders off of Jailen Peguero and a two-run double by Mike Carp off of Kevin Jepsen.

Mike MacDonald (3-2) had his personal three-game winning streak come to an end as he took the loss. The Rainiers scored all five of their runs against MacDonald in the fourth inning.
The Bees closed the gap to two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Sean Rodriguez belted a three run homer off the batter's eye in center field. Brandon Wood added two hits for the Bees, who drop two in a row for just the second time this season. Chris Pettit singled in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.

Wow, what else Can I say about tonights game.

First, Lackey made a 60 pitch rehab outing. When you No-Hit a team, that gets you into the 5th inning. but that was nothing Compared to what Brad Coon, and Bobby Wilson did in the Bottom of the 4th. Two Grand Slams, With no out.

We went from pitchers duel to a blowout.

Gary Patchett would add a 2 run dinger in the bottom of the 5th. and we won 13 to nothing.

Oh, and the Best Part!! Rich Pitched a Scoreless 1-2-3 Ninth inning to close em out.

The Salt Lake Bees tied a PCL record with two grand slams in one inning, as they routed the Tacoma Rainiers 13-0 on Tuesday night.

Brad Coon and Bobby Wilson each delivered a bases loaded blast in the fourth inning off of former Salt Lake pitcher Steven Shell to give the Bees an 8-0 lead. Gary Patchett would later add a two-run shot in the fifth inning.

Five Bees pitchers combined to throw the first nine inning one-hitter in the 16-year history of the Salt Lake franchise and they were led by Angels star John Lackey, who was on an injury rehab assignment. Lackey, who pitched for Salt Lake in 2001 and 2002, went four and two-third innings and allowed no runs on one hit with three strikeouts and one walk. Jailen Peguero, Brad Knox, Daniel Davidson and Rich Thompson followed to toss a combined four and one-third innings of hitless and scoreless relief with Knox (2-1) earning the win. Chris Pettit, Matt Brown, Adam Pavkovich, Wilson and Patchett each had two hits for Salt Lake, which has now won five straight games.

Top of First.... 2 outs, 2 runs scored, 1 solo shot, and a handful of hits manufactured the second, this one looked U.G.L.Y.

Fr. Rodriguez relieved Salmon after a mere 2 and 1/3rd, Not a Good Start.
We're getting out played, But Staying in it Some How...

2 Solo Shots hit off Francisco in the 4th break the tie, and put us down 2, the soggy damp chill is getting to them.

Top of the 5th, Gary Patchett, Back from a stint in Arkansas, Made a great stab of a shot deep in the hole to save a run, (at least) and end the inning.

We Scored 5 runs in the 7th, and 8th to win 9-7. We still have that late inning kick.

I love it when a readers comments inspire me to write a new Post!!

"Too bad that the name of your blog is already outdated. I can't believe they changed the name of the field again.How would it be to be "Derks field" again. I guess we'll get used to the new name, like we've gotten used to the new colors and the new team names and the new team affiliation and the new.............uugh. "

There was actually a very specific Reason for leaving it alone. Salt Lake baseball had Class, at Franklin Covey Field. Yeah, i know it was just a corporate naming agreement, but it was one of the better ones around, and most of my Triple A memories were made there, with the Buzz, and the Stingers, before i fell in love with Baseball again last year.

To me, a name like "spring mobile ballpark', is like changing the Boston Garden to TD Banknorth Garden, or whatever mouthful of crud it is now. It just took a level of, something intangible, away from the best AAA experience in the West.

Utahs "Energy Solutions Arena" used to be called "The Delta Center". Now it goes by the mutinous Nickname "Radium Stadium" due to ESA's work with nuclear waste.

I Understand that teams are doing it as a revenue stream, I also have the perspective that classic field names were worth honoring. men showing up in shirts and ties, women showing up in dresses.

Spring Mobile Sounds like Dr. Seuss's Typewriter Exploded.

Just Some thoughts about the end of the First month.

After last years start, anything the Guys did this year would be a minor, minor letdown. 22-2 was a hell of a start.

The Guys, as usual, are great about signing autographs, But there are three that just stand out above everyone else.

Freddy, Our Third Baseman, when he comes through, always has a smile on his face, and is willing to sign anything. He has enthusiasm no matter what the night before did to him. He's a Great Example that people can follow. And, to be honest one of my favorite players.

Rich Thompson, I neglected to point out more detail in my game posts.

Rich is a workhorse of a Pitcher, and Recently saved us a game by pitching out of a bases loaded Jam. He pitched in the World Baseball Classic For Australia, and was a Silver medalist in Athens.

I'm glad to have him on the team.

And Adam Pavkovich.

Adam is a Good Guy, and our resident Crash Davis. He has the best walk up song on the team, kenny chesney's, "She thinks my tractors sexy." He also has the record of most games played in a Bees uniform.

I would really like to see him break into the majors, but i don't think it'll happen with the angels.

Not much to say about the game tonight. Guys tried hard, but with two credited errors and a remarkably inconsistent umping crew, they did there best.

Dark moment: Top 9 1 out. Portland DH Josh Alley takes a hard Ty Cobb Esque slide (out of the base path) into our Second Baseman, Luis Figueroa. He did limp off the field under his own power, but i doubt we'll see him the next few weeks.

Great Haul of Autographs, Including Ryan Budde Who finally came out for the first time in Salt Lake This year. And the Sweet Spot Balls from Adam, and Freddy, that they gave me the last home stand.

Game One

Terry Evans Hit his Third home run of the year, a 2 run Job.

Rich Thompson, Wearing Number 17, rather than his Usual 19, pitched out of a one out, bases loaded Jam to preserve the lead.

Game Two

Brad Salmon Started, a quick operator, our newest pitchers all seem to be.

The heber valley rail train, the kiddie ride in the outfield blew up in the bottom of the first, kinda fun. no one was hurt. Chris Pettit hit a great 2 run double to start the Scoring, and Terry Evans Started In Center Field.

Top of the 2nd, Reggie made a great grab on a low liner to right, keeping us scoreless.

5-0 Top of the Third.

Eliezar Alfonso, the portland catcher hit a solo home run to left field, which was caught, and then Thrown back in a fit of Wrigley-Esque Pique.

Same Guy was tossed the last out Ball by Terry Evans.

Sean O'sullivan, and Bobby Mosebach made their first pitching appearances for Salt Lake, O'Sullivan is a bigger kid, but a quick operator, trying to keep hitters ofr balance, by not letting them get comfortable.

Mosebach has a hard time finding the Strike Zone, but when he does, Watch Out.

Freddy Sandoval, My Favorite Player, Made a great play practically from his knees in the top of the fourth that almost resulted in a double play.

Sean O'Sullivan was solid in his Triple-A debut, as he led the Salt Lake Bees to a 9-2 win over the Portland Beavers on Saturday night.

O'Sullivan, who was 1-2 in three starts for Double-A Arkansas, worked six and one-third innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Twelve of the 19 outs recorded by O'Sullivan came on ground balls.

The Bees grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first inning on two run doubles by Chris Pettit and Sean Rodriguez. Rodriguez would extend it to 5-0 with a leadoff home run in the fourth. Brad Coon would add a run-scoring single later in the inning and the Bees would add two more in the seventh and one more run in the eighth. Will better Document next Homestand

Sean Rodriguez drove in three runs to lead the Salt Lake Bees to a 7-5 win over the Las Vegas 51s on Thursday night. Rodriguez delivered a two-run double in the third inning, led off the fifth with his third homerun of the season and scored an insurance run in the seventh, as he came home from second base on an infield single by Terry Evans.

Matt Palmer (1-1) worked six solid innings to pick up his first win in a Salt Lake uniform, as he allowed four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Jeremy Hill earned his first save by retiring the last six Las Vegas batters of the game.

Ryan Budde opened the scoring with a leadoff homerun in the third inning and went 2-for-3 on the night. Abel Nieves also had two hits for the Bees, as they close out their first homestand of the season with a 5-2 record.

Three innings of three runs or more keyed an 11-4 win for the Salt Lake Bees in game one of their doubleheader on Wednesday night against Las Vegas. The 51s jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the nightcap and earned a split of the twinbill with 6-4 win.
In the opener, Adam Pavkovich delivered a three run double in the first inning to put the Bees ahead to stay. Reggie Willits had three hits and two RBI in his first game back with Salt Lake, while Sean Rodriguez added a two-run homer. Brad Knox (1-0) picked up the win, as he allowed just two runs on four hits in five innings.
In game two, Bees' starter Anthony Ortega (1-1) struggled in suffering his first career AAA loss after six straight wins dating back to last season. Ortega gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits with four walks and no strikeouts, as Salt Lake fell behind 5-0 in the third. The Bees rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third, the final three on a home run by Terry Evans, but that would be as close as they would get, as the 51s would get an insurance run in the fifth inning.

Was debating whether or not to go to this Game. Boy am I glad I did.

Top of the 4th Inning, Freddy Sandoval threw me a foul ball from third base, and the cool part is i caught it, without looking like a fool.

First Baseball I’ve gotten at the park during a game, since 1990 when a tim clark line drive caught me in the elbow.

No change to las vegas’ uniforms with the change of the affiliation.

Pregame music is getting worse, they seem to think louder is better.

As a memorial to Nick, both Freddy, and Brad tapped his bees number that has been painted on the field, and pointed skyward. will have to try and get pictures.

Vegas third base looks like John Goodman circa the flintstones.

Busted Bat nearly hit Freddy in the head, and he still made the out. Brad made a great knee height catch to end the 2nd Inning

Denham was replaced by wilhite with a 5-2 lead.

And in vintage wilhite fashion, he gave up three runs, then took out the side.

Back to back Home Runs in the 2nd inning lead off our scoring.

Top of the 4th, a missed hit and run sign hung a reno runner out to dry at home plate.

Sean Rodriguez hit a 3 run home run in the bottom of the 6th to give us all the offense that we’d need.

Top of the 7th, botched double steal attempt lead to some great photos.

#40 Rafael Rodriguez closed an uneventful ninth for the win.

On opening night, the last thing that you want to do is start the day with bad news, but thats what we have today.

Nick was killed in a car accidcent in California last night, after a very solid outing against the A's. Six scoreless innings.

"ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart and two other people were killed early Thursday when a minivan ran a red light and struck the sports car they were traveling in, authorities said.
Adenhart, 22, died after undergoing surgery, University of California, Irvine Medical Center spokesman John Murray said.
A fourth person remained hospitalized in critical condition.

"Nick's family expresses sincere gratitude for all the help the Angels have provided," the Adenhart family said in a statement. "He lived his dream and was blessed to be part of an organization comprised of such warm, caring, and compassionate people. The Angels were his extended family. Thanks to all of Nick's loyal supporters and fans throughout his career. He will always be in everyone's hearts forever."
Angels outfielder Torii Hunter was sleeping when his wife called him, asking whether the news was true. Hunter immediately called the Angels' team trainer, who confirmed that Adenhart had been killed.
"I'm in shock right now," Hunter said. "He just pitched last night. It doesn't seem like this is happening.
"This is real life. This isn't about baseball. This is his whole life, he had his whole life ahead of him. He's only 22, he's still a kid. He was a great kid, he was funny, he was very popular in the clubhouse and off the field. People loved him."
Adenhart and three other people were in a silver Mitsubishi that was struck shortly before 12:30 a.m. local time by a minivan that ran a red light and also hit another vehicle, police said.
The sports car struck a light pole, killing three people inside.
The Angels, in a statement, said the female driver and another male passenger were dead in the Mitsubishi when police and firefighters arrived. The team said no other members of the organization were involved in the crash.
"The Angels family has suffered a tremendous loss today. We are deeply saddened and shocked by this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nick's family, friends, loved ones and fans," Angels general manager Tony Reagins said in the statement.
The crash took place just hours after Adenhart pitched in a loss against the Oakland Athletics. He got a no-decision after six scoreless innings, giving up seven hits, striking out five and walking three in just his fourth major league start.
Police Lt. Craig Brower said the minivan driver fled the crash scene and was captured a short time later. The driver was arrested and booked for investigation of felony hit-and-run.
Adenhart, a 6-foot-3, 185-pounder from Silver Spring, Md., was a 14th-round pick in the 2004 draft, and made his major league debut on May 1, 2008, also against the Athletics.
He made two other major league starts, getting his only decision in a victory over the Chicago White Sox on May 12. He was 37-28 in the minor leagues from 2005 to 2008, including 9-13 last year at Triple-A Salt Lake.
He got his break this year with a good spring training and the fact the team needed help in the starting rotation, with John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Kelvim Escobar all starting on the disabled list.
The Minnesota Twins held a moment of silence before their game against the Seattle Mariners Thursday afternoon. Also, there was to be a moment of silence before the start of the Texas Rangers' home game against the Cleveland Indians.
There was no word on whether the Angels' Thursday night game against the Athletics will still take place.
"I'm pretty sure we'll go to the stadium," Hunter said. "I think we're going to get together, that's what [manager] Mike [Scioscia] does. We'll talk about what we need to do about helping the family out. Forget us, I worry about his family. That's real love right there. Baseball is temporary.

my friend brian had spent several games with him in the outfield crowd at Franklin Covey last season talking, sharing ideas, making small talk, Nick was the kind of guy you could go have a beer with after the first meeting.

The Rain in Salt Lake may be lightening up, but it will be a somber crowd at the ballyard tonight.

Today, the paper announced that the Bees were changing their stadium name to ‘spring mobile ballpark’.

I am not pleased, baseball in Utah used to have class.

‘Franklin Covey Field’…. sounded, Nice. Now, not so much.

But, its better than the alternative… ‘walmart yard’ , Deseret Industries Field…. my list goes on.

On a positive note, Opening Night is under 48 hours away. Yay Baseball!!

Dustin Moseley threw seven good innings to help us win 4-1 over tucson. Moseley gave up one run on six hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts and no walks, as he snaps a personal three game losing streak. Henry Bonilla closed out the game with two scoreless innings to earn his third save of the season.

The Bees took the lead in the first when Brad Coon scored on the front end of a attempted double steal as the Tucson catcher dropped the ball. (those of us that were at the park had no clue he'd scored at first, we were heckling the ump before gradually we figured the close call was in our favor)

Chris Walker's run scoring fielder's choice in the third made it 2-0 and he would later add an RBI single.

Gary Patchett tripled in the third inning for his first three base hit since April 11, 2001 and the second of his nine year pro career.

Scary Game moment - Bottom of the first, Terry Evans, our right fielder, and Gary Patchett collided , and Terry was taken out of the game.

Decided the less said about this one the better. So i'd combine them.

Friday we got our Hinds handed to us on a platter, not too dissimilar from The angels 9-0 loss to the Twinkies.

Adenhart started, Regrettably, and was shelved in the 4th, down only 4-1. he would later get the loss. :-(

Saturday, Bees Really can sting.

After being down 1 in the Top of the First, Shortstop Brandon wood punched home run # 30 with a man on base. putting us up 2-1 We never looked back.

Tonights Starter, Anthony ortega, Record 2-0

last 5 games of the regular season at Franklin covey. Rather macabre feeling in the air last homestand is always bitter.

Coon belted two home runs in a game, leading our Bees to an 8-2 win over Tucson.

Coon started the scoring for the Bees with a first inning leadoff homer and he drilled a two run shot in the fifth.

Coon ended the night with three hits and three runs batted in. Dee Brown and Brandon Wood hit back-to-back blasts in the seventh to cap off the scoring for Salt Lake. Anthony Ortega (3-0) earned the win, as he allowed just two runs on nine hits in six innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Henry Bonilla (2 IP) and Matt Wilhite (1 IP) closed out the game with three scoreless innings of relief work. Bobby Wilson and Brown each had two hits and one run batted in, while Wood added two hits and three RBI.

Last nights game brought back memories of that miraculous month of April.

Bobby Wilson hit his third home run of the year. in the bottom of the 10th Inning. We won 5-4

The Salt Lake bees look to defend their league-best 72-50 record when they face a tough road test against the 70-52 Sacramento River Cats.

The Bees and the River Cats are both holding on to their leads in their respective divisions. Salt Lake has an eight-game lead over Tacoma in the Pacific North division, while Sacramento has a 6.5 game lead over Las Vegas in the Pacific South division.

The teams have faced each other in three series earlier this season, with Sacramento leading 7-5.

Despite heading into the series with a 5-7 showing against the River Cats, the Bees tout the best away record in the PCL at 34-29.

Nick Adenhart is scheduled to make the start tonight. Adehnart is 7-10 with a 5.89 ERA heading into the game. The top pitching prospect in the minors has had strong showings during his last three outings, limiting opponents to four or less earned runs.

Wow, what to say about the last game of te seconmd to last home stand of the year.

After failing to make any impact the first two games of the homestand, the bats exploded for 17 runs in the last two, reminding people that homefield advantage means something.

After bobby wilsons first inning grand slam, that was enough.

Wow, today was a weird one, but Damn it was fun.

First lets go through the Autograph Line.

Nick green, the starting pitcher came out to sign, He never does on the days he pitches, after tonight, he may well never again.

Dee Brown, a Perrenial jerk at home, signed the entire line.

Jason Bulger, one of our all stars signed a Bat for me.

First, a little back story, My buddy Brian Asked him to sign a Baseball on the sweet spot, Jason got a really furitive look on his Face, and muttered so that only we can hear, "Does Bobby know about this?" Ball Players are traditionally not supposed to sign that spot. We both laughed, and said no, that ball was meant just for him.

I told him while he was signing my bat, not to worry, he laughed and said naw, there all sweet spots.

Kasey Olenberger let me Babysit his Glove while he signed for the whole line.

Yeah, we lost the game. But who gives a turn. It was a fun, and unique night.

Tonights Starter: Nick Green, 7 -4 #23

Tonight is the last Game in Omaha before jetting off to Iowa to battle the Cubs.

We Start Nick Green a great Pitcher, with one flaw. He is not a groundball pitcher. He usually leaves the ball up in the zone, which has contributed mightily to his ERA. He prefers to choose the home alternate jersey While at franklin covey eschewing the convential whites.

A rather tense game early when home runs decided the score. we finished in extra innings. All star closer Jason Bulger got the win.

With two out and no runners on base, Adam Pavkovich drew a base on balls. Johnson then lined the first pitch from Omaha reliever Jeff Fulchino to the wall in right center to bring home Pavkovich. Johnson scored on a single to left by Adam Morrissey. The Bees trailed by two going into the ninth, but Brandon Wood singled and scored on a double by Dee Brown and an error by left fielder Chris Lubanski. Brown then scored the tying run on a single by Pavkovich.

Tonights Starter: Adenhart. Gods Help Us.

Nick is a great Guy, he is fantastically polite, and Positive with his fans, and will often have conversations with the public. He also is one of most heralded minor league pitchers the angels have seen.

Nick Got Shelled in a 3 Game stint with anaheim this year, and his confidence just isn't same.

Before he was called up:

4 - 0 with a sub 1.0 ERA

After:

2 - 10 with an ERA over 6.

I hope he gets his form back.

Post Game: ok, i'm wrong again, but this time in a good way. Nick Adenhart tossed six and one-third strong innings to lead the Salt Lake Bees to a 5-1 win over the Home Team.

Kasey Olenberger and Henry Bonilla combined for one and two-third scoreless innings of relief to close out the game. The Bees trailed 1-0 when Kendry Morales led off the fourth with a home run over the batter's eye in center field

Tonights Starter Giancarlo Alvarado:
With a 6-4 Record may not seem like a dominant pitcher. but the hometown boys are 15-4 in games that hes started this year. he is great at demoralizing lineups.

Um, Okay, make that 15-5. Alvarado kept it close. But when the bullpen came in, the runs started coming across the plate.

The Omaha Royals would score three in the sixth, three more in the seventh and they would add four runs in the eighth off of Jeff Kennard (4-3), who took the loss, and David Austen.

Not one of our better performances.

Shane Loux became the Pacific Coast League's first twelve game winner of the season, as the Salt Lake Bees edged the Omaha Royals 5-4 on Wednesday night.

Shane is now only one win from tying Dustin Mosely for the Bees single season Franchise Record of 13 wins.

Adam Pavkovich hit his Career best 21st Home run of the Year.

I'd love to have been on the road for that one.

Bees Beat New Orleans

SALT LAKE RALLIES TO TAKE SERIES
	Jul 29, 2008 The Bees took advantage of some sloppy defense to rally with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for an 11-6 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Tuesday night. Salt Lake jumped to a 4-0 lead in the fourth, but the Zephyrs put six runs on the board against Dustin Moseley in the sixth to take a two run lead. The Bees had runners at first and third in the sixth when Adam Pavkovich's ground ball was booted by New Orleans third baseman Anderson Machado to score the first run. One out later, Tim Duff put Salt Lake back in front with a two run single. Another run scored when Machado bobbled a grounder by Sean Rodriguez and threw the ball into right field for his third error of the inning to score Duff. Rodriguez then came home on a single by Freddy Sandoval. Moseley (6-6) got the win as he tossed five scoreless innings before giving up six in the sixth. Chris Bootcheck threw three shutout innings to record his first save of the season. Sandoval led the Bees with three hits and two runs batted in, while Kendry Morales added two hits and four runs batted in with a two run homer and a two run double.

one of the best reminders of that trip to the ball park is a signed baseball, and not the kind that you buy from the souvenir shop either.

But, in order to make it effective, and positive, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, always know the Current Roster,
When you ask a guy for his autograph its discouraging to look at someone elses card. This does get hard as the season passes, but the team does do a great job of updating their records.

Second, always have the right tools. Don't ask for a signature on a baseball bat with a ball point pen.

Third, Be polite,

and by this, i mean a couple of things.

First, always ask, never demand. manners are your passport with these guys.

Second, never ask them to sign 50 things at once. other people want to get things signed too, and the players appreciate the chance to get to all their fans.
